I asked my mother, “What would you have done with your life had you not become a mother?”

In a workshop directed by Jill Greenhalgh, 10 selected performers explored personal stories and experiences that emerge from reflections of being a daughter or having daughters. The culminating performance-installation invites witnesses to share one-on-one intimate yet public encounters with the performers.

Performed (in German/English) at Magdalena Munich, a festival for women in independent theater and performance.

Audience members are invited to sit across the table from the artist.
The table is set for a Chinese meal.
Each card depicts a Chinese character, representing a story about the artist’s mother.
As the performance proceeds, the cards accumulate on the table.
The audience is invited to try a piece of “dim sum“, a type of Cantonese cuisine that the artist’s mother served while working her first job as a new immigrant to the U.S.
The stories are collected from the artist’s personal recollections and through interviews with her mother.
