MATERNAL FANTASIES is an interdisciplinary group of international artists and cultural producers based in Berlin, Germany exploring the most marginalised topic within both the art world and feminist discourse: Motherhood.

We began meeting in February 2018 to examine through artistic research, collaborative artworks and lived experience the dynamics between artistic creation and motherhood, in order to shape the discourse of motherhood through our artistic working process.

“Like So Many …”

Installation view, “Like so many …” for Colleagues Wanted I – Superheroines and visionary associates, alpha nova galerie futura, Berlin, Germany, 2018

In the group exhibition “Colleagues Wanted I – Superheroines and visionary associates” at alpha nova galerie futura berlin, the artist group Maternal Fantasies presents a photo-text installation whose starting point is a collective writing session, as well as a series of staged photographic and moving images. The texts are composed of fragments of autobiographical-tinged writing that have arisen from grappling with motherhood, identity and representation, as well as with second wave feminist polemical pamphlets. The visual components recall tableaux vivants that are staged with varying numbers of group members and children. Artistic production appears here as collective experience. Outdated role models are countered by contemporary, processual alternatives developed through practical work.” –Dr. Katharina Koch / alpha nova galerie futura
